Christopher Monks – director
Pergolesi Stabat mater; Purcell Dido and Aeneas
Making a welcome return to Thaxted, the choir and instrumental ensemble of Armonico Consort, who celebrated their twentieth birthday in 2021, bring their freshness and directness to two central Baroque works. Pergolesi conveys the sorrow of Mary, mother of Jesus, at the foot of the cross. This piece is one of his most celebrated sacred works, composed in the final weeks of his life. It offers a very personal response to the religious experience and is an astonishing work from a composer who died at such a tragically young age. Dido & Aeneas is the only complete opera written during Purcell’s short life. Dido’s plaintive Lament forms the climax to this work which lies at the heart of British musical heritage.
‘This new recording [of Dido and Aeneas] directed by Christopher Monks certainly lacks nothing in humanity, poignancy and vitality’ The Daily Telegraph
