This afternoon performance, in Thaxted’s United Reformed Church, will bring alive Sondheim duets from such classic shows as Follies, Into the Woods, Sweeney Todd, Company and A Little Night Music. Together with a sprinkling of solos and a song with music by Richard Rodgers, it will be a fitting celebration of the life of Stephen Sondheim (1930-2021). A towering figure in twentieth-century musical theatre, Sondheim’s brilliance in matching words and music in dramatic situations broke new ground. Musicals had traditionally been the voice of hope; perhaps naive, perhaps foolish. Sondheim’s were about understanding human emotions. Performed by leading soloists who appear regularly at English National Opera and the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, this is a performance not to be missed.
This concert is supported by friends of Thaxted Festival who wish to remain anonymous.
