Vaughan Williams Songs of Travel; Butterworth A Shropshire Lad; Songs by Ireland, Warlock, Britten and others. New Commission by Sarah Cattley, in association with Music at Paxton.
Roderick Williams, the internationally acclaimed soloist and opera singer, with Susie Allan, his accompanist of over two decades, celebrate the richness of the English song tradition, in addition to introducing some female composers and a new commission by local composer Sarah Cattley, in association with Music at Paxton, generously supported by the Ralph Vaughan Williams Trust. Vaughan Williams’ first major foray into song writing, Songs of Travel is a cycle of nine songs drawn from texts by Robert Louis Stevenson, and portrays a world-weary yet resolute traveller. Butterworth’s settings for voice and piano of poems from A E Housman’s A Shropshire Lad are among his best known works. Sarah Cattley is an award-winning young composer based near Cambridge. The evening will be a satisfying balance of old and new, familiar and less well known.
This concert is sponsored by friends of Thaxted Festival who wish to remain anonymous, and is also supported by Thaxted Music Lovers.
