Haydn: String Quartet Op 20 No 4 in D major
Beethoven: String Quartet Op 135 No 16 in F major
Haydn: String Quartet Op 64 No 3 in B flat major

The Doric String Quartet have become firmly established on the classical music scene since their formation in 1998. Here they perform works central to the string quartet repertoire. The opening Haydn Quartet, composed in 1772, is one of a widely admired group which helped to earn him the title of ‘father of the string quartet’. Although Beethoven’s Op 135 No 16 quartet was the last he wrote, it is far from dark. It is uplifting, with parts full of rhythmic jokes, but with a sublimely peaceful slow movement. Haydn’s quartet Op 64 No 4 is a spirited response by the composer to the insatiable demand for string quartets in the 1790s.

‘The range of sounds the Doric produces, from clarion calls to whispering, vibrato-lite pianissimos, demonstrates the quartet’s appreciation of the architecture as well as the filigree of the music…’ The Strad

This concert is generously sponsored by Dr Simon and Chris Jackson.
