Based in Essex, Wild Arts takes world class performances to beautiful places in the UK and Europe, and we are delighted to welcome them back to Thaxted for this fully staged production, sung in English, directed by Dominic Dromgoole (Old Vic, Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre, Oxford Stage Company). Following Wild Arts’ triumphant appearances in The Elixir of Love and The Magic Flute in our last two seasons, this will be an feast for all opera lovers. Those who are new to opera will find the evening an ideal introduction to the form in our relaxed and welcoming setting.

Tchaikovsky’s sumptuous music tells a story of love, loss, rejection and despair, with a tragic twist and a lyrical ending. On the way there are beguiling melodies, superb arias, and a grand ball.

‘The production is phenomenally inventive, entertaining, and full of insight, with a combination of talent, a superb group of talented professional instrumentalists, a fine conductor and an imaginative director in James Hurley. Wild Arts continues to entertain and to stimulate in equal measure. This, surely, is what opera is all about.’ Colin Clarke, Classical Explorer, reviewing Magic Flute at our 2024 Festival

There will be a long interval for picnics in Thaxted’s Conservation Garden, close to the church, or dinner locally. When you book tickets for the opera, you will be able to purchase places for your picnic at £2 each. The garden will be open from 4.00pm when you can bring in your picnic and set up your places. A very limited number of seats and table space will be provided, so we advise you to bring your own. The garden will be stewarded throughout the evening, so that you can safely leave things and collect them at the end of the opera.

This concert is supported by a circle of Thaxted Festival friends of opera.

Venue: Thaxted Parish Church
Tickets: £48*, £44, £36, £28, £16. Age 30 and under: £10.
*Premium seating in centre front rows.

Claire Seymour, in Seen and Heard International.
“…this was a wonderfully enjoyable and engaging performance that really punched above its weight. The audience in Thaxted clearly loved it and were fully engaged, whilst this experienced reviewer was carried away as well.”
