Thaxted Festival Foundation is delighted to announce the appointment of Andrew Jenkins as Artistic Director.
Andrew has been a member of the Festival Foundation board since 2017, and has played a major role in the development of the Festival’s marketing, promotion and online ticketing. In the last two years he has taken on the role of Acting Artistic Director, building on previous planning to prepare the 2020 season, which was unable to go ahead, and our highly successful 2021 season which took place within the restrictions then in force.
Andrew has a strong musical background, having followed his initial piano studies with training at Liverpool’s Anglican Cathedral, and at three churches in north-west England. He followed this with a career with two major UK music publishers in London, as well as working in theatre management and production. Andrew says about his appointment:
‘I am honoured that the Festival Foundation Board has entrusted me with the role of Artistic Director, and I will do my utmost to continue the tradition of presenting excellence in professional performance set by my predecessors, which dates back to Gustav Holst and Thaxted’s Whitsuntide Festivals.
‘I plan to continue to celebrate the connection with Holst and his wider circle of contemporaries, which include Elgar, Vaughan Williams, Stanford, Delius, Finzi, Parry, Britten, Howells, Walton and others. The 150th anniversary of Holst’s birth will an occasion for special programming in 2024. At the same time, the Festival will continue to champion the best of emerging artists and composers, and will continue to feature jazz and other genres alongside its core classical offering. With Thaxted’s unique setting and venues, I am keen to develop affiliate events as companions to our main Festival programme.
A full programme over four weekends from 17 June to 10 July has now been planned by Andrew for 2022, in part based on our planning for the 2020 events which could not take place. 2023 will be the first full Festival planned and developed by Andrew in this confirmed role, leading up to the special Holst anniversary year in 2024.
The board is delighted that Andrew has agreed to accept this central position, and wishes him every success. The extent of the role will necessitate some reassignment of his other responsibilities, which will be announced in due course.
