Thaxted Festival is delighted to announce two new music education projects with local primary schools. These will be held during this year’s Thaxted Festival, which runs between 23 June and 16 July 2017, and both involve leading professional musicians working with local children.
In the first project, players from the Brandenburg Sinfonia will lead music workshops at Great Sampford Primary School. This school offers regular guitar lessons, and several pupils (as well as the headteacher) play the instrument. Pupils participating in this project will be part of the audience at the Festival’s opening concert, where renowned classical guitarist Craig Ogden is the soloist in Rodrigo’s famous Concierto de Aranjuez, alongside the full orchestra of the Brandenburg Sinfonia. This project will be supported by Orchestras Live and their funding partners. See Craig Ogden talking about the Rodrigo concerto and playing an extract at the foot of this page.
The second project is at Henham & Ugley Primary School and will be led by Slidin’ About - a young and dynamic trombone quartet (who are also giving this year’s Family Concert.) Several pupils are already learning the trombone at this school, and they can look forward to enjoying the energy and virtuosity of these young professional musicians, as well as their great communication skills. Slidin’ About performed and kept an appreciative audience amused at last year’s Festival; you can see them playing a piece for a young audience at the foot of this page.
Thaxted Festival’s music education projects always create great enthusiasm in both pupils and staff in our schools, and we are very pleased to have the support which enables us to run these two new projects this year, for the benefit of children in local schools. Here are some comments from previous years which convey the quality, intensity and enjoyment of the experience:
