Programme

Jonathan Bloxham, conductor Matilda Lloyd, trumpet

Handel: Water Music Suite No 2 in D major
Haydn: Trumpet Concerto in E flat major
Mozart: Symphony No 40 in G minor K550

Don’t miss the opening concert of our 40th anniversary season, bringing a feast of elegant Baroque music from our Orchestra in Residence, the London Mozart Players, together with star trumpet soloist Matilda Lloyd. Handel composed his stately Water Music in 1717 for King George I, who was so delighted with its first performance that he demanded it be played over again!

Haydn’s ground-breaking Trumpet Concerto sees a welcome return to Thaxted for leading trumpeter Matilda Lloyd. Matilda appeared last year with the Gesualdo 6, as well as earlier in her career and while she was studying at Trinity College, Cambridge. Celebrated for her flawless tone, purity of line and dynamic subtlety, Matilda is a radiant force in classical music, captivating audiences with her virtuosic command of the instrument.

The programme is completed by Mozart’s ever-popular and uplifting Symphony No 40 in G minor, making this an opening night not to be missed.

During the Festival, members of London Mozart Players will be working with pupils from Thaxted Primary School and other local schools to enable the children to develop and perform their own pieces of music. Thaxted Festival is very grateful for the funding support it has received from a number of sources, including local charities, to support this education programme.

'Lloyd plays with intense expression and immense warmth. The flawless tone, purity of line and dynamic subtlety she coaxes from her instrument are shown off to particularly impressive effect.' BBC Music magazine, June 2023

This concert is supported by a generous donation from Gareth and Pauline Stainer in memory of John R Stainer OBE, organist and composer, who was Registrar of the Royal College of Music from 1959 to 1976. The concert is produced in association with Orchestras Live.
