A Beginner’s Guide to Classical Music Festivals

What to expect, how to prepare, and why you might fall in love with the experience.

If you’re curious about classical music festivals but aren’t sure where to begin - don’t worry, you’re not alone. Whether you’re dipping a toe into live classical music for the first time or just unsure of the festival format, this guide is for you.

We’ll walk you through what classical music festivals are all about, what you can expect, and how to get the most out of your experience - plus a few things that make Thaxted Festival a particularly welcoming place for newcomers.

What Is a Classical Music Festival?

Classical music festivals range from grand international events at opera houses to intimate village gatherings in historic churches - and everything in between. What they all have in common is a love of live music, an opportunity to hear top-quality performers, and often a sense of place or community.

At Thaxted Festival, for example, you’ll find:

• A 4-week summer season of concerts in the stunning medieval Thaxted Parish Church
• Performances by leading orchestras, rising stars, acclaimed soloists, and genre-crossing artists
• A warm, informal atmosphere - no dress codes or stiff etiquette!

What’s the Experience Like?

Forget any assumptions of formal silence and evening gowns. Today’s classical festivals are about connection, discovery, and atmosphere.

At Thaxted Festival:

• Choose the seats that suit you using our simple online booking system
• Applause is welcome - clap when you’re moved!
• You can enjoy a drink from our Marquee Bar in the interval or even have a picnic before an early evening concert
• Some concerts are shorter or more relaxed, great for dipping in without committing to a full-length symphony

Do I Need to Know Classical Music?

Not at all. One of the joys of live classical music is experiencing it with fresh ears. Programmes often include introductions or programme notes, and some artists speak directly to the audience, giving helpful insights or stories behind the music.

Thaxted’s programming mixes well-known composers (like Mozart, Beethoven, and Tchaikovsky) with newer discoveries - so there’s always something to latch onto, whatever your musical background.

There is a wide mix of genres too, encompassing orchestral, chamber, vocal, choral, blues, tango and more, all performed by world-leading artists.

Can I Bring the Kids?

Yes! Classical festivals can be wonderfully enriching experiences for children, and Thaxted Festival in particular embraces young audiences and families.

Our special family concert (at Audley End Miniature Railway) is designed with children in mind - featuring Disney classics, fun repertoire, and a magical steam train ride through the woods.

Young people are also welcome at all our concerts, and many events feature younger musicians, accessible programmes and shorter formats ideal for younger attention spans. Tickets for under-18’s cost just £5 for selected events.

What Should I Wear?

There’s no dress code! At Thaxted Festival, you’ll see everything from smart-casual to full summer comfort. Wear what makes you feel comfortable and relaxed - we’re here for the music, not the fashion show.

Where Do Classical Music Festivals Take Place?

Some festivals take place in concert halls, others in outdoor tents or purpose-built venues. Thaxted Festival is held in a stunning 14th-century church, known for its excellent acoustics and peaceful surroundings.

You'll also find festivals in:

• Historic country estates (e.g., Garsington or Glyndebourne)
• Urban centres (e.g., Edinburgh or Cheltenham)
• Seaside towns (e.g., Aldeburgh)
• Rural retreats like Thaxted, where the setting is part of the magic (multiple venues, most evening concerts take place in the grand medieval Parish Church and the more intimate United Reformed Church.)
