In 2026, Thaxted Festival celebrates a remarkable milestone: 40 years of music for the Festival in its modern form. What began in 1987 as a bold revival of a historic musical tradition has grown into one of the UK’s leading independent music festivals - a vibrant celebration of artistry, community, and place.
As we look ahead to this special anniversary season, it’s the perfect moment to reflect on how far the Festival has come, what makes it unique, and why it continues to thrive.
While the modern Festival began in the years leading up to 1986, Thaxted’s musical heritage stretches back much further, inspired by the early 20th-century work of composer Gustav Holst, who brought music-making to the town through the Whitsuntide festivals which he developed together with Thaxted’s Rector, Fr Conrad Noel.
That spirit of collaboration, accessibility, and community still defines the Festival today. When the modern incarnation was established, it built on these foundations - combining professional excellence with a welcoming, inclusive ethos that remains at its heart.
Over the past 40 years, Thaxted Festival has earned a reputation for world-class programming in an intimate and inspiring setting.
Each summer, across four weekends in June and July, audiences gather in Thaxted Parish Church - a magnificent medieval space whose acoustics and atmosphere elevate every performance.
From orchestral masterworks and chamber music to opera, jazz, folk, blues and family events, the Festival offers a rich and varied programme. It’s this diversity that has helped it grow year on year, attracting discerning music lovers from across Essex, Hertfordshire, Suffolk, Cambridgeshire and London, as well as dedicated festival-goers from further afield.
In 2025, over 2,600 people attended, a testament to the Festival’s growing appeal.
One of Thaxted Festival’s defining strengths is its ability to bring together established performers and emerging talent.
Across its history, the Festival has welcomed artists at the height of their careers, while also championing rising stars through initiatives such as its Developing Artists Programme. Many performers who appeared early in their careers at Thaxted have gone on to achieve international acclaim - a point of pride for audiences who can say, “we heard them here first.”
This balance between experience and discovery ensures that every season feels both grounded and fresh.
Thaxted Festival has always been about more than music alone. Over the years, it has expanded to include:
• Family-friendly events, introducing younger audiences to live performance
• Education projects, inspiring local schoolchildren through workshops and rehearsals
• Festival Extra events, from talks and films to guided tours and community experiences
• Opportunities to explore the historic town of Thaxted and its surrounding countryside
This broader programme reflects the Festival’s ethos: to create a cultural experience that is welcoming, enriching and deeply connected to its setting.
Ask anyone who has attended Thaxted Festival what makes it special, and the answer is rarely just the music.
It’s the combination of elements:
• The beauty of the historic surroundings
• The warmth of the welcome
• The closeness between performer and audience
• The chance to relax, explore, and connect
Whether enjoying a pre-concert stroll through the town, meeting friends in the marquee, or listening as the final notes echo through the church, the experience is one that stays with you.
