The Nash Ensemble present a sumptuous concert of music by Schubert, Beethoven and Berwald. Resident Chamber Ensemble at Wigmore Hall, Nash Ensemble are described as ‘chamber music royalty’.
Schubert: String Trio in B♭ D471
Berwald: Grand Septet in B♭
Beethoven: Septet in E♭ Op 20
The Nash Ensemble is renowned as one of Britain’s finest chamber ensembles, formed 60 years ago this year. Winners of numerous awards, they have been the Resident Chamber Ensemble at Wigmore Hall since 2010.
Their programme will envelop us in sumptuous nineteenth-century chamber music. Schubert’s delightful 1816 String Trio is a miniature gem, a microcosm of his later style, and a treasured work in the string repertoire. Swedish composer Berwald chose the same combination of instruments as Beethoven in his Septet, but his is written in his own expressive voice, with influence of Italian opera in the Finale. Beethoven’s enormously popular Septet, composed in 1799 before the composer had any inkling of his impending deafness, epitomises the frothiest of late-18th century musical entertainments – the serenade and divertimento tradition.
