Step aboard a miniature steam train for a delightful adventure through the ancient woodland of Audley End. This much-loved attraction is the setting for one of our most enchanting events of the summer: a musical journey with the Haverhill Youth and Community Band, performing a joyful, toe-tapping mix of old favourites, movie themes and Disney classics in a woodland glade.

After the ride, families can enjoy refreshments, explore the surroundings, and soak up the atmosphere of this unique and nostalgic venue. The event was a runaway hit in 2023 - so be sure to book early to secure your spot!

Our family events and 18 and under discounted tickets are supported by the Essex County Council Arts and Cultural Fund.

A Festival for All Ages

While this event is specially designed for families, it’s far from the only way young people can get involved at Thaxted Festival. Across our summer season, we’re proud to welcome and celebrate young performers and young audiences throughout the programme.

Rising stars like Charlotte Saluste-Bridoux, Jonathan Leibovitz, and Jaeden Izik-Dzurko bring thrilling energy to the stage, with performances that are both accessible and inspiring for curious young listeners. Meet the rising stars of Thaxted Festival

Our concerts are informal and welcoming, and many are ideal for introducing children and teens to live classical music - from the dazzling sound of the London Mozart Players to the unforgettable London Tango Quintet. There is a variety of afternoon events, so no need to stay up too late!

Selected events feature special discounted pricing for young people - £10 for age 30 and under, and £5 for 18 and under. Look out for these in our 2025 Events Listings.

Festival Extras: More Than Music

Beyond the main concert programme, our Festival Extra series offers even more ways to engage, discover, and enjoy - from talks and workshops to community events. These are a great way for older children and teenagers to deepen their understanding of music, meet artists, or explore behind-the-scenes stories in a relaxed setting.

This year’s programme includes a Ghost Walk in Thaxted, and a screening of the classic film Quartet, which is rated 12A.

So, whether it’s a family day out with fairies, trains and trumpets, or a chance to inspire the next generation of music lovers, Thaxted Festival is proud to offer something for everyone.

Come and make music part of your summer story - together!
