Our 2024 Festival closes with Elgar’s Serenade for Strings, Holst’s St Paul’s Suite, Vaughan Williams’ Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis and Dvořák’s Serenade for Strings.
Elgar: Serenade for strings in E minor Op 20
Holst: St Paul’s Suite in C major Op 29 No 2
Vaughan Williams: Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis
Dvořák: Serenade for strings in E major Op 22
The string section from our Orchestra-in-Residence, London Mozart Players, brings our 2024 Festival to a close with a programme of well-loved favourites including Vaughan Williams’ Fantasia on an old hymn tune by the 16th century English composer Thomas Tallis. The haunting melody and mystical harmonies regularly place it in Classic FM’s Hall of Fame top five. Two Serenades frame the programme: the first by Elgar, with its fine sustained violin melody in the second movement, and the other the elegant, courtly five-movement work by Dvořák. Holst’s idyllic Suite, using traditional English melodies, is the first of the works he wrote for St Paul’s Girls School in Hammersmith, where he was Director of Music.
